FSSAI bans junk foods sales and ads in schools and colleges

Why have sales and advertisements of junk foods been banned?

Sales and advertisement of junk meals in school canteens and inside 50 meters around college campuses have been banned so that use of secure and healthy meals for children can be promoted. FSSAI spoke about this on Tuesday.
 
What views did FSSAI present on this topic?

FSSAI stated its views in a statement that The Food Safety and Standards (Safe Food and healthful diets for School Children) Regulations, 2020 on this regard has been notified now giving attention over the comments that have been made by stakeholders.
FSSAI further stated that they will give enough time for all stakeholders before implementing these rules.
 
What alternative did FSSAI mention till the rules are implemented?

FSSAI is looking to ask State Food Authorities/ Department of Education to broaden the use of secure and balanced diets for kids in school in accordance with the guidance mentioned and listed in the regulations, stated FSSAI.
 
What things do regulations state?

According to the regulations ,'Foods which are excessive in saturated for or trans-fats or added sugar or sodium (HFSS) can not be offered to students in school canteens, mess premises, kitchens or in an area inside fifty meters from the school gate in any direction.

Also, FBOs that stand for Food Business Operators, producing HFSS meals are 'barred from marketing and advertising of such meals to kids in school surrounding area which even comprises of  through logos, brand names, posters, textbook covers etc. or in a place inside fifty meters from the school gate in any direction.'

The school authority have to make sure that a board containing warning 'Now no longer sell (which include free sale or marketplace or advertise) the meals having excessive amount of saturated fats or trans-fats or delivered sugar sodium inside school premises  or campus' in English or one Indian language, as relevant , to be displayed immediately on the doorway gate or gates of the school, colleges.

Besides, there is necessity of having a license in order to be eligible to sell or provide catering service for school foods, by the school administration itself or by the help of FBOs contracted by the school administration.

FBOs that have been contracted by the state government also have to be licensed in order to continue or operate Mid-Day meal scheme.

They also need to be in compliance with the necessities of sanitary and hygienic practices to the meals provider services, as stated under the schedule four of the Food Safety and Standards( Licensing and Registration of Food Businesses) Regulations, 2011, FSSAI stated. Also, there comes need of implementation of comprehensive programs by the side of school authorities in order to promote safe, healthy foods for school children and also the conversion of colleges, campuses into Eat right campus, giving maximum emphasis on the safe, healthy, local, seasonal foods and also rehearsing or practicing among children on topic of food waste, as stated by specific benchmarks.

In order to increase the promotions of use of safe and healthy diets in school premises, in accordance to the guidelines set aside by NIN, that stands for The National Institution of Nutrition, the school administration should hire nutritionists, dietitians in order to provide the necessary help for preparation of food menu for children.

Also, in order to make sure that students have been provided with safe, healthy as well as hygienic foods, inspections must be conducted within the school premises on a regular basis. Also it would be better if Health and Wellness team or A Health and Wellness ambassador, is appointed for keeping in check availability of the safe, healthy and balanced diet, FSSAI stated.
In addition to state food authorities, local food authorities, should make sure that everyone are in compliance with these regulations.

The regulations also state the need of creating a sub committee, by the State Level Advisory committee in order to monitor if regulations are implemented and also to make sure that safe food are distributed among children.

It is crucial that proper ingesting behavior have to be ingrained in kids from early childhood.  The significance of a healthful and balanced diet results in cognitive capacity development in kids and also assists them grow better as well as remain healthy.' FSSAI stated. The main objective of these regulations being clarification of what is right and what is not, for children, it stated.
