In India, the Indian Food Safety and Standards Authority
(FSSAI) issues FSSAI Registration/License Certificates to Food Operators (FBOs)
under the Food Safety and Standards Act 2006. Anyone who wants to start a food

There are 3 types of FSSAI Registration
There are three types of FSSAI registrations: FBOs must
apply for proper registration with the FSSAI on the FoSCoS website. FSSAI
Registration Type:
Basic FSSAI Registration: Small FBOs with an annual turnover of less than 12 lakhs and
a food production capacity of up to 100 liters/kg per day are required to apply
for the FSSAI Basic Enrollment Certificate.
FSSAI State License:
Small businesses with annual sales exceeding Rs 12 million but falling within
Rs 20 million are required to apply for a FSSAI state license from the
provincial government.
FSSAI Central License:
Large commercial organizations with
annual turnover exceeding Rs 20 billion are required to apply for the FSSAI
central license certificate from the central government.
Procedures before
issuing an FSSAI Certificate:

When an FBO applies for an FSSAI Enrollment/License Certificate; the FSSAI
performs the following procedures before issuing an FSSAI Certificate:
- Proof of receipt of payment from
FSSAI application jurisdiction and office (if applicable).
- Document review Inspection of food
stores prior to issuance of licenses, if necessary.
Once the FSSAI authorities are satisfied with the
application and documentation, a copy of the FSSAI Registration Certificate with a QR code will be sent to the applicant's FBO email address.
FSSAI License Number:
The FSSAI certificate contains a 14-digit license number
that all TSFs must display on their food packaging and in a conspicuous place
on their food packaging and business address or premises. The 14-digit FSSAI
license number is divided into 5 sections. Each section of the FSSAI license
number provides the FSSAI with some information about the FBO and sets it apart
from others.
The 5 sections of
the FSSAI license number are:
- Section 1 - contains the first number. Indicates whether the
food business is registered/licensed with FSSAI.
- Section 2 - Contains the second and third digits of the
license number. He represents the code of the state in which the food business
is registered and operated.
- Section 3 - Contains the 4th and 5th digits of the license number.
Indicates the year in which food business was approved by the Ministry of Food
and Drug Safety.
- Section 4 - Contains the 6th, 7th and 8th digits of the
license number. Indicates the number of registered masters.
- Section 5 - Include the last 6 digits of your license
number. Represents a unique FBO license number.
Steps to upload the FSSAI certificate:
After your FSSAI license/enrollment has been sent to your
FBO email, you can download your FSSAI certificate. Here are the steps to
upload your FSSAI certificate:
- Step 1. Visit the FoSCos website and click the "Enter
Business" option on the main page.
- Step 2: Enter your username, password and captcha and click
the Login button.
- Step 3: The control panel will be displayed on the screen. Click
the Released option.
- Step 4: Click the "License Issued" option when
applying for an FSSAI license or click the "Issue Certificate of
Enrollment" option when applying for FSSAI registration.
- Step 5: The FSSAI certificate is displayed on the details
screen. Click the FSSAI Certificate Enrollment Number in the
Reference/Enrollment Number column of the certificate details.
- Step 6: The FSSAI certificate will open. Click the download
button/image on the page and click Save. The FSSAI registration/license
certificate is uploaded.
Importance of FSSAI
Certificate:
- Once FSSAI certified, the FBO must
display that certification on food premises and display the FSSAI registration
number on all packaged foods. CCOs may use the FSSAI logo on food packaging.
- The FSSAI certificate or logo
assures that the quality of the food has been verified and can be safely consumed.
FSSAI certification helps increase the credibility of your food business and
attracts investors, partners and customers.
- Failure to obtain FSSAI license certification may result in civil liability.
Food safety officers inspect/inspect premises or food items and impose
heavy fines if the FBO is not FSSAI certified. Therefore, you must be
registered with the FSSAI.
